Yesterday my roommate, Jenny, and I went to a class at the universidad de sevilla with the intercambio. It´s a class about English cinema and fictional literature, taught in English. The first half of the class, though, was a debate between the students in the class and an adminstrator from the school about the coinciding times of final exams and fellowship application deadlines. I could not understand one thing they said.

Then, a girl gave a presentation about a character from the book Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell. I´ve never read the book but am semi-interested because she showed several clips from the BBC made for tv movie, and I love made for tv movies. I did not understand much of the presenter´s English, but she does speak the language better than I speak Spanish.

Today we are visiting the cathedral. My señora, Mercedes, packed me a "bochadilla" which is just a sandwich and an apple. She´s got nothing on the school lunches mom used to pack me in high school.

I did ask her and they do not use corn in any sort of tortilla. Sorry, Mary. Last night she was excited that she included corn in a pasta salad.

Lunch here is the big meal, when we have pasta or chicken or menu items we would typically reserve for supper in the United States. Then, the lighter meal, the BLT, grilled cheese, tortilla, is served for supper.

We had tortillas two nights ago, which I really enjoyed. A tortilla here is just an omelette with cheese, onions, and potatoes. Jenny and I ate earlier than Mercedes, at 8:30 (she said we were crazy to eat that early) because we had the plans to meet for ice cream.

Mercedes teases me about not liking her cooking because I never eat everything on my plate. Some of it isn´t my favorite, but I don´t hate it. I think it´s about acquiring the taste because all the food is fried, or covered in oil or vinegar and everything has salt. I asked Mercedes if I could have a tomatoe without salt and vinager and she thought I was crazy.

Fruit for desert at every meal. I don´t know if I´m eating healthier by cutting out soda, snacks, and sweets or since most of my meals are fried carbs or carbs covered in salt.

The ice cream I had was pretty dece, but I´m only treating myself maybe once a week.

Two habits I´m adopting that I´d like to bring back to the US are not snacking so much and not being on the computer 24/7.

Snacking will be hard because the meal schedules and sleeping schedules are so different.

And LBH, I´ll pick up my online habits ASAP when I get back. Mercedes does have wireless Internet, but I didn´t have room to pack a computer. I suppose I didn´t come to Spain to sit on a computer all day anyway....

I´m off to class.

TTYL :)

It's too bad about the corn tortillas. I really thought that would be a winning idea. If you think of anything you want mailed, let me know. I have a little free time these days. Don't think I've given up on the idea of calling you. Mom wanted me to check in with Ben or Steve and find out what sort of charge I would get for calling an international number. Hopefully it's cheap...but clearly I haven't gotten that done yet. That would require me being productive...
