I thought "foo foo" was a PCism

I stopped at S-Bucks after my workout tonight. 10pm is a little unorthodox for coffee, even for me, but I had a craving and once I saw a gift card in my wallet it was a definite go.

I was totally prepared to finish off the card and pay the remaining balance with change. That there was actually over $10 left on the card was a nice little plus to my day. And we all know I need as many pluses as I can get.

Anyway, the drink was perfect and just the pick-me-up I needed. I gave the barista (is a barista still a barista if he's a guy? I'm sure this has been lamented before over at 4000 days or at least by Craig Wilson) props for giving me "so little room you hardly know it's there."

Needless to say, I was feeling GREAT about this coffee.

On my way out to the parking lot, a couple walking towards the downtown area glanced my direction. The guy muttered something along the lines of, "...feel cool drinking foo foo drinks from Starbucks..."

My initial reaction was shock because I had no idea "foo foo" was a phrase used among the masses ( Is it correct grammar to include a hyphen? Google is providing me with no conclusive evidence, so I'm just sticking with consistency). I was taken aback and slightly impressed. Did I know this kid? Was he a native of the Duck Creek S-bucks?

My second reaction was a defensive one. BECAUSE I DO NOT DRINK FOO FOO DRINKS. And I don't see what about my tall cardboard cup indicates that I would. I had to restrain myself from charging the kid and telling him that my Starbucks Americano was probably less expensive and equally, if not more, delicious than an Americano at whatever grungy coffee shop he and his hippie friends go to for double strictly espresso shots.

SORRY I ADD WATER.

Further, I was wearing workout clothes and drenched in sweat. WHY WOULD I DRINK A 400 CALORIE DRINK AFTER EXERCISING?

He's lucky the "foo-foo" threw me off guard and that by the time I realized I was offended he was half a block in the opposite direction.

Don't know the origins of foo foo, we can leave that to PCH and 1. Guess the story shows that you can't judge the coffe by its container....

1.1 has taken to ordering a tall extra hot non-fat latte and i love giving him crap about his foo foo drink. one day i was talking to the barista (and yes, they're baristas if they are male or female) and laughing about how my big strong manly husband needs a latte. 1.1's manliness can be debated at another time. perhaps this is a new piece of evidence supporting the case that he is in fact a metro. but i degress....back to sbs. of course, after i collected my order, the guy behind me proceeded to order a latte. i almost felt the need to apologize for insulting his drink perference

I'd also like to comment on the 400 calorie beverage after working out...great frickin question b/c I actually see people at my gym bring the 400 calorie drink with them to workout (you can see the foam/whip cream coming out of the lid). Why the #$@! would you get up at 4am to be at the gym??? I think this is similar to seeing doctors/nurses smoking outside of the hospitals.

In response to Kevin - I see both sides to that equation. On the one hand - I am predominantly strictly a coffee/americano drinker. This is both because I am cheap (I recently invested in an inexpensive espresso machine and now make espresso at home, transport it in my thermal mug and add hot water from the cooler at work to make an americano) and also because I try not to get too fat. Well, technically usually I'm trying to lose weight, but most frequently I consider maintaining a "win". However - on occasion, I do get the urge to splurge with an afternoon peppermint mocha. And you better believe if i'm dropping 300 cals on a beverage, I'm punishing myself in the gym later for it. So i guess if these folks around your gym are going to drink 400 cal coffees - it's a darn good thing they're making it to spin. b/c that lady i ran into at 9 with the stretch pants, cellulite and venti mocha frap sure didn't.
