Trips to Ames always leave me wondering "what if?". I didn't apply there, or even visit the campus before deciding on Iowa. Though I hate to admit, at decision-making time, having Mary in IC, and my best friend coming to this school, I wasn't really looking for an alternative. I just really like that the campus is more spread out than ours. It's very green. They do have a smaller downtown, which doesn't really matter to me, and their equivilant to the Coralville strip is within walking distance and has the school cambus make stops there. It's more like the "I just had a good feeling when I walked on campus" notion that lots of freshmen choose a school for. Oh well, I like IC, too. I mean, it's close to home, right?
Incidentally, that best friend from high school is supposedly transferring to Iowa State next year, for his fourth and fifth years. He came to Iowa over Iowa State, even though it doesn't have the major he's interested in, because, well, he's a Hawkeye fan. However, after two years of taking gen-eds and considering possible alternatives, our school still does not carry the major. So he has to go one that does. That he's lost most of the relationships he had when he came here and has failed to create moreprobably contributes to this.
For some reason, I feel annoyed by this. It doesn't really make sense because most students don't know for sure what they want to do and a fifth year is not uncommon. And, obviously, factors (friends) besides academia contribute to one's happiness. I suppose I'm a little jealous of the opportunity to change environments.
He and I are a lot alike - generally, cynical and unhappy. So, I wonder if he'll acually be much happier there, or if when the new wears off he'll be himself. But, thats a year away, lets see if he follows through.
I mean, I don't necessarily think I would be happier somewhere else. Certainly not as a transfer. Friends are important, and while mine are far and few between, I don't know that I'd have many more anywhere else. One of my friends from the dorms was also unable to find that group of friends. She liked the classes, but transfered to Macalester for this year to be closer to her family and friends from high school.
Anyway, I ended up going to Ames Friday evening and seeing, not kidding, about 50 of my non-closest high school friends. But it was fun. For one night.
I predicted our loss, just because everyone else thought we would win. We don't win when we are supposed to.
I had hoped to be more productive today. I had a risk management retreat and then work. Probably could have gotten some more studying done. I watched Love Actually instead. Mary inspired me.
Anyway, I can't really think of anything exciting to say, which is dumb, because I thought I would be able to come up with something funny for the first entry in 1208458584 years. I mean, I've been trying to do some writing on my own, like, real writing. The problem is, I don't know yet if it's important to anyone else. And in JMC school, they tell you it has to be important to the reader.
It's no Frank and Melanie, I'll tell you that much!

I don't know whether what you write has to be important to someone else. But it does have to hit some kind of a chord to the reader. Everyone has a certain amount of daily time that is allocated to the non-critical, don't-really-have-to-get-it-done-today things. (For the procrastinator, the whole day may be available.) Much of this time can be spent on day-dreaming, fantasy things. We all live a little vicariously through others.
Reading (whether it be hard news, gossip or fiction) is one of the ways to feed this direction-less state. A writer needs to figure out which group of daydreamers he or she wants to capture. And write about what is, if not important, is at least of interest to them.
And what is of interest changes as the culture of that group evolves. Kind of like "in" things or places.
In these types of discussions, I have frequently quoted the character Curry from the movie City Slickers: "Life is about just one thing." The thing? That's what you have to figure out!
I'm jealous about Love Actually. It didnt happen for me. I went shopping, both Saturday and Sunday. I had to go both days mostly because I had planned to go Saturday, and when it was time, I had nothing to wear. It was chilly so my usual sundress or rolled up jeans with one of the three tops I own and like were not an option. I couldnt even wear them with a coat, because the only coats I have are long dress coats. Which are nice, but it wasn't THAT cold. Getting dressed to go shopping on Saturday was such an unhappy event that when I left, I was determined to buy SOMETHING so I would not have to undergo the same frustration again next weekend. Plus, I wanted to have something to wear in case someday I get to see people during cold weather in a social situation. Not that that is particularly likely or anything, since all i ever wear is suits, but you know. You have to have a dream...Luckily, as you might imagine, I found absolutely nothing to buy, as I am perhaps the pickiest shopper ever. Plus I went in with an idea of a few things I wanted to buy, and you know that never works out to my favor. At James's urging, I even took a step that I typically avoid, and asked some sales associates to help me. Apparently in my un-fashionable, three seasons out of style GAP sweater I did not look like my commission would be worth anyone's time. The sales people were at best, dismissive, and at worst, rude. I wanted to come back later with armloads of shopping bags, in the Julia-Roberts-Pretty-Woman fantasy way, and show those salespeople that they really blew it by not assisting me. But remember, I didn't buy anything. So instead, I went home sort of sullen and depressed. Hence, shopping part II on Sunday. It was only slightly more successful. I got some long-johns and a sweater vest on sale at Jcrew, but that was all. I was too worn out from the previous day's efforts (the shopping, and the 75min body sculping class that had my muscles SCREAMING Sunday morning), to really put my heart into it. So anyway, if it's below 70 degrees, and you dont want me to wear a suit- probably don't invite me to do anything. I suppose those snotty salespeople knew what they were doing giving me the brush off...
anyways... sorry for the extended entry. look forward to seeing everyone this weekend..
3, you should try shopping online and saving yourself the trip and stress. you can get ANYTHING online, even lightweight coats.
doesn't look like you'll need them this weekend....race weather looks balmy.
